Most expensive Art in 2014 is ......Barnett Newman's Black Fire 1

Black Fire 1
Someone ask me what do I think of "Black Fire I"? Well it’s not important what I think because it was  Sold for: $84.2 million (YES !!!!) last year. It was one of the highest price paid was also the world auction record for artist Barnett Newman, who died in 1970. His previous record-selling painting was "Onement VI," which sold in 2013 at Sotheby's for $43.8 million.
The use of a black palette in this piece is similar to his other work of that time period. "Newman wanted to handle the raw canvas, relative to the black, in such a way that it would 'become color' and possess its own sense of light," according to a profile of the artist by the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Onement VI

Who bought it, you must be very curious – well as always, buyers of such expensive art prefer to remain anonymous. One thing for sure it’s not me J

  1. Even I could do this, paint a canvas all blue & draw a straight white line in the middle. Who are all the suckers that think this is art worthy of millions beats me ???

  2. There is a lot of modern art that is great, that would even challenge someone who's sensitive to stop and think. This, on the other hand, is a BIG Fat joke, a prank possibly.
This is neither expressionism or modern art. My house painter could do better !

The person who pays for it might want to kill himself after some thought - or like everyone might suspect, something strange going on ...?????

  3. This is why modern art could never be compared to or will ever equal the masters. Most of it is like a hoax !! In this case, any house painter could do a better job- this is not ART.

    1. Then why is your house painter not doing it?
Art is more then what meets the eye. It's about culture, the shift of ideas & perception. Only people who knows a little about art history understands that.
As for layman- you'll never get it. Read it up. People buying into this is buying more than the physical painting, it's all about what's the story, the meaning, & idea behind.

  5. This painting is stunning & brave ! Well it is abstract expressionism done by a brilliant man and it is often seen as the beginning of contemporary and art through minimal form.
Sure the lots of you might not understand it or even hated it but there are others who love it –who appreciate what it represents. The beginning of a new idea/ concept.
Regarding the price…….. please… don’t you know there are people who make this kind of money on a weekly basis ? So for them , it’s nothing, after all it is Barnett Newman.

    1. Stunning?? A canvas painted with blue and a white line is brilliant ? This is hardly art…its more of a lazy gimmick , almost a fraud.....

  7. This “art” is a total insult to talented people who really create true works of beauty . You can talk about it all you want, this remains – a single colour on a canvas, oh… lets not forget- that white line & those idiots that pay millions for it…. Give me a break !

    1. You need to be a truly great artist to sell a painting of a blue rectangle with a white stripe for millions of dollars.
Art is subjective. This painting is about color and emotion. Not all paintings need to be a vase of sunflowers or bowls of fruits to fit the "criteria."

    2. I dont see any or feel any emotion from this painting- oh wait... I do get a little fed-up as this blue canvas could fetch such a high price really kinda pisses me off !!!

  8. So what's the great inspiration for this piece of scrap?
What the hell is the artist trying to say?
I really dont get it.....all I see is a blue canvas divided by this white line.
Yes it does gets me thinking.... thinking of why someone would pay millions for it, or why this is even consider worth that much, or why it's even consider great art.
Where's the creativity or imagination? This piece of work lacks both in creativity & imagination, something great ART should possess.

  9. You are suppose to learn something from Art… there’s nothing to learn here . Regarding what it represents , you “are suppose to get something from it” – I seriously don’t know what anyone could get from a canvas with a singular color & a strip in the middle. Wait……. except possibly how to do nothing and get so much recognition for it! Maybe the concept of the first painting is something revolutionary- but after that, it’s no longer. Why should we even give a thought to a series of such nothingness? And pay so much for it, ridiculous !

    1. Not the artist fault. Why not paint these if people are willing to pay for it. I'm sure it could be finish within an hr vs masters like Vermeer, whose painting could take months- it's plain economics. I'll do it if I can find suckers who'll pay :)) So dont blame the artist

  10. It's not about the artist, the tactic or even the subject & concept.
It's all about how the painting makes you feel.

    1. Wow.. it makes me wonder why the artist decide to separate the perfect blue canvas. The white line makes me uncomfortable. Also are they hanging it the right way? A horizontal white line would definitely make me feel better.

  11. Hi Soba, I think you are right concerning most art, but "art" like these.... hmm..... Technically speaking the artist didn't even paint anything recognizable, like everyone said. The situation is like the emperor's new clothes , yay?

    1. You are wrong , everyone recognize it as a blue ping pong table ...lol...

  12. My first lesson in art class was to paint the background. Turnout,Looks almost like the Onement VI (blue ping pong table...lol...)above ! Except without the white dividing line. I was painting the sky & sea, so .... you figure haha.
